Talk on Beowulf and 'home' at Essex Book Festival, March 2016

Wednesday, 16 Dec 2015

Anglo-Saxon helmet Chris will be giving a public talk on Saturday, March 19th (1100, Firstsite in Colchester) as part of the Essex Book Festival on Beowulf and 'home'. This is part of a 'Talking Home/Writing Home' weekend taking place at the festival (http://www.essexbookfestival.org.uk/). The talk (around 30 minutes, with illustrations) will explore notions of 'home' as those are expressed in the epic poem Beowulf, which Chris has translated afresh for Carcanet Press, and will touch on matters as diverse as early Christian reinterpretations of 'home' as heavenly reward, the suspension of thematic contrasts in Beowulf's conclusion, why the end of the Odyssey isn't really The End and - not least - Star Trek: Voyager.
